1. Submit your interview to Ms. Mak
2. Journal Entry: Based on your movie analysis, what are the key elements of a appealing movie/an episode of a series/a commercial?

3. Effective Storytelling:  (Quick Review)

  • The Archetypes?  Hollywood Formula?
  • The Plot Structure

4. From Scripting to Storyboarding:

  • 1)  Brainstorm an idea 2)  write a skeleton plot  3)  design the characters.     (Show it to Ms Mak before you begin the script & the storyboard)
  • Write a skeleton script + Storyboarding (Plan for at least 4 scenes and 3 different shots per scene).
  • The Video clip should be around 3 – 7 minutes.

Homework:

  • Complete the script and the storyboard.

The Shape of Today’s Class

1. Interview Video Presentation (around 20 min)
2. Forming your Production Team (around 5 min)

  • Form a 3 – 5 members production team.
  • Submit your group member names to Ms. Mak (tcm1@sfu.ca).

3. Research on the Stages of Film Production (around 15 min)

  • Research group will meet up and find out about the five stages of film production.
  • Each group can add their findings in the corresponding research document below:

4. Report  your research to your Production Team (Around 10 min)

  • Summarize the research into a summary report for the whole group (Use the report template or other format approved by Ms. Mak)
  • Some of you will need to report to more than one group.

5. Short Film – Intro to Story Development  (Around 10 min)

  • Play one of the following short films + Plot analysis exercise (As a class)
  1. Fantasia 2000 (One of the symphony)
  2. Wallace & Gromit (A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave)
  3. Finding Nemo (“Knick Knack”)
  4. The Incredibles (“Jack Jack Attack” and “Boundin’”)
  5. Toy Story 1 & 2 (“Tin Toy”, “Luxo Jr.”)
  6. Monster, Inc (“For the Birds”, “Mike’s New Car”, “The Monster Inc. Company Play” and “For the Birds”)

6. Journal Entry: Do you think all of them are necessary for a film production?  Which stages will be sufficient for a low-budget home film production?

Homework:

  • Analyze a video clip.  (Pick your personal favorite.  )
  • Please email Ms. Mak @ tcm1@sfu.ca for video approval.
  • You will be analyzing other aspects of the same clips, make sure you record or save your video clips so that you can watch it again.
